Half-naked Oscar pic?

I always wanted to do this!
This picture has driven me mad for years and I still wonder if it´s real. I got it from Richard Ellmann´s bio "Oscar Wilde", it had credits and all. It´s our sweet Oscar performing as Salome in his own play, and he´s topless! In a dress.

Now what do you think?!

I dunno, it really looks like salome has boobs so I don't know if it is Oscar! but really, WHO CARES.

Oscar was quite the pudgy fellow, even in his younger days. ;)

It's him, no doubt. You can find this photo in a number of different biographies.

...I´ve heard that expression on MTV just yesterday. When a black guy tried to make his parents understand why he dates a fat black girl. You don´t really say that?

I only say it as a joke :)

I've read a book that says this is actually not him?! It was a biography of his, and said people often mistook this for him.. I'm not sure about that. They said it was an actor.. (or actoress, for that matter)

Well, but then this actor looks very much like Oscar ;-) Nose and eyes?! It had french credits.

That picture isn't of Wilde; it's of a Hungarian actress, Alice Guszalewicz, who portrayed Salome in 1906. There's another picture of her in the costume here.

She does bear a striking resemblance to him, though.

"One particular photograph with the caption, 'Wilde in costume as Salome,' is falsely identified as Wilde. It was not until 1992, five years after Ellmann's biography was published, that John Stokes and, subsequently in 1994, Merlin Holland, Oscar Wilde's grandson, acknowledging the scholarly pursuit of Horst Schroeder, corrected and explained the error. In The Times Literary Supplement Merlin Holland alerted readers that this photograph is not of Wilde but of Alice Guszalewicz, a Hungarian actress who, in 1906, played Salome in Richard Strauss's opera. It should be noted, as Merlin Holland points out, it is likely that Ellmann, so near to the end of his own life, did not personally verify the source of the photograph. Ellmann might have prevented the error had circumstances been different." (From an interesting Cornell article about Wilde, available here)

... @_@ That`s pretty much proof. Pitty. You disenchanted the whole lot of us, thanks. Now I`m crying. ;_;
No, it`s not that serious.
The actress has no boobs, nevertheless, and can therefore be easily mistaken for Oscar. XD

Sorry. ^^; I thought it was him for a couple of years too, until I saw it mentioned in Joseph Pearce's Wilde biography that the photo was misidentified and looked into it. I wonder if there was ever a corrected edition of the Ellmann book - my copy's only seven or eight years old, but it's definitely got the mistake in there.

(Then again, my copy also says that Ellmann is still alive on the copyright page... XD)

Dang! I'd read that it was actually a photo of a rather portly female opera singer in the Salome costume. My paperback edition of the Ellmann bio still describes it as Oscar. Actually, the person in the photo doesn't have that much in the way of cleavage. Oh well...who knows, Oscar might well have enjoyed dressing up in such attire, just for a fun photo-op. He could seldom resist one of those...
